0 Candidates for President of Armenia Shot by Strangers

Presidential candidate and leader of the Armenian Self Determination Movement, was shot in the street Paruyr Hayrikyan Tpagrichneri midnight Thursday (31/01). Hayrikian shot in the upper chest by an unknown person.

He immediately underwent surgery at the Hospital of St. Gregory, in the center of Yerevan. A spokesman for the hospital said today Hayrikian condition is stable.

"Now his life is no longer in danger and is in the process of recovery," said a spokeswoman for the hospital, told armenianweekly.com, Thursday, January 31, 2013.

Prime Minister Tigran Sargsyan, Minister of Health, Terenik Toumanyan, two other presidential candidates, Raffi Hovannisian and Hrant Bagratian reportedly visited the hospital to see the latest condition Hayrikian.

Tigran told the media that the shooting attempt Hayrikian an action to destroy Armenia. He also ordered the local police to immediately search for the shooter.

Paruyr Harikian is one of eight candidates to be elected President of Armenia on February 18. As a result of this incident, threatened election postponed.

According to article 98 in the Armenian Presidential election rules, if a presidential candidate had an insurmountable obstacle that the election should be postponed for two weeks. There is not any decision of the chairman of the Armenian parliament in this regard.
