TEHRAN - The Iranian government claimed, World War III might erupt if Israel attacked the Islamic Republic.

Brigadier General Amir-Ali Hajizadeh, the commander of the Air Division of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC), warned that an Israeli attack on Iran could trigger World War III, according to Press TV, Sunday (23/09/2012).

Israel, which threatened to destroy Iran's nuclear installations in recent years, have always been very concerned about the Iranian nuclear program, which the West suspects led to the creation of nuclear weapons, but under the guise of civilian purposes.

Iran has insisted its nuclear program is solely for peaceful purposes and warned that Tehran would retaliate if attacked.

Hajizadeh said, in the case of the outbreak of such a war against Iran, the situation going out of control, according to Press TV. "This war seems to be turning into World War III," Hajizadeh said, as quoted by Xinhua.

He added, it means that some other countries may be dragged into war to support or oppose Iran.

"We see the United States and the Zionist regime (Israel) side by side and we just can not imagine that the Zionist regime will start a war (against Iran) without the support of the U.S.," Hajizadeh said.

"The Islamic Republic of Iran considers the U.S. bases in the region as part of the land of America and of course go after all of that if war broke out," he said.

On Saturday, IRGC Commander Major General Mohammad Ali Jafari said, the war against Iran will eventually happen, said Press TV. "The war will happen, but it is not clear where and when," Jafari said, adding that Iran is ready to face any attack that might be launched against the country.
