Doomsday Party

The presence of tourists in Guatemala to attend the "party of doom" have damaged ancient stone temples in Tikal, the largest archaeological sites and urban centers of the Maya civilization.

"Unfortunately, many tourists climb Temple II and cause damage," said Osvaldo Gomez, technical advisor site located about 550 kilometers north of Guatemala City.

"We actually allow the celebration, but travelers should be aware of because it is a World Heritage Site by UNESCO," he told local media. Gomez did not disclose specifically what was done by the tourists.

He said that the climb up the ladder on the site is prohibited and indicates that the damage can not be repaired.

Temple II, with a height of approximately 38 meters and overlooking the central plaza of Tikal, was known to have the best structure on the site.

Last Friday marked the end of an era that lasted for 5,200 years according to the Mayan calendar "Long Count". Some people believe the date that is the end of the world as stated by Maya hieroglyphic letters.

More than 7,000 people visited Tikal on Friday to see the descendants of Mayan indigenous religious leaders held a festive ceremony and fireworks at the dawn of a new era began to dawn.

Analysts complained that the event entirely to wasatawan and only slightly related to the Maya. Approximately 42 percent of the 14.3 million population of Guatemala is the Mayan descent and most live in poverty and face discrimination.

Ancient Maya kingdom experienced its heyday in Central America between the years 250 to 900 BC. UNESCO declared Tikal then as a World Heritage Site in 1979.
